Stem
cells are self-renewing cells that can grow to become other types
of body tissue. Much controversy has risen over the use of embryonic
stem cells, but there are also adult stem cells which are found in
a variety of tissues including fat. New technological advances have
been happening for a long time in the study of stem cell therapy and
the most current advancements are happening in veterinary medicine
using adult stem cells harvested from the animal's own fat.
It is important
to understand that these cells are already working every moment of
every day. As the body undergoes wear and tear, adult stem cells help
repair those injuries and keep the body maintaining health and fitness.
As one ages, these activities slow and stem cells become less active.
Regenerative therapy aims to help re-activate the body's own healing
capabilities by utilizing the body's own stem cells in places of degeneration.
Because
stem cells can differentiate into other cell types such as bone, cartilage,
nerves, muscle, it is thought they can be used to regenerate damaged
or degenerated tissue. The most promising results so far in our canine
patients appear to be for pain control in cases of degenerative joint
disease and osteoarthritis.
Dr. Craig and
Dr. Kim have recently become credentialed by Vet
Stem Inc, allowing them to utilize this exciting new technology
right here at Pet Kare Clinic in Steamboat Springs. We are excited
to implement these treatments to get some patients feeling better
and would love to chat with you to see if stem cells might be right
for your dog or cat. Please call during business hours to schedule
a screening exam or to have one of them look over your dog's record.
Several tests may be required to determine if this is the best therapy
for your case or if other treatments may work better.
In general,
the perfect case for stem cell therapy is as follows:
- Is not responding
well to NSAIDs such as Rimadyl, Deramax, Zubrin, Previcox - or is
not able to tolerate NSAIDs
- Is not a good
surgical candidate due to age, health, owner economics/preferences.
- Has localized
osteoarthritis or immune mediated polyarthritis.
- Is likely to
need long term therapeutic support.
